• MADD’s mission statement is to stop drunk driving, support the victims of this violent crime and prevent underage drinking.
• MADD began in 1980 following the death of a 13-year-old at the hands of a drunk driver. The mother of the teen – Candice Lightner – began the organization to help educate people about the dangers of drunk driving so others would not have to go through the same situation.
• In 2002, MADD created an “Eight-Point Plan” which included goals like increasing the number of checkpoints, increasing beer excise taxes, creating more sanctions for high-risk drivers and more.
• MADD was influential in making the idea of using a designated driver so popular. The organization also lobbied to get the legal blood alcohol limit lowered from .10 to .08.
• MADD has a four-point plan to completely eliminate drunk driving in the United States through technology, activism and laws.
